1. Range, oven, cooktop and dryer frames — 250.140
- (A) New circuits: the branch circuit includes an equipment grounding conductor and the frame is connected to it per 250.134/250.138 (4-wire cord and NEMA 14-30/14-50 receptacle).
- (B) Existing branch circuits only (no EGC in the circuit): the frame may be connected to the grounded (neutral) conductor where all of the following are met: (1) the supply is 120/240 V single-phase 3-wire or 208Y/120 V from a 3-phase 4-wire wye; (2) the grounded conductor is not smaller than 10 AWG copper or 8 AWG aluminum/CCA; (3) the receptacle grounding contacts are bonded to the equipment; and (4) the grounded conductor is insulated, or is the uninsulated conductor of Type SE cable in a branch circuit that originates at the service equipment (or SE cable from elsewhere with the grounded conductor insulated or field-covered within the enclosure).
- 250.142(B) Exception 1 is the matching permission for these existing frames; everything else on the load side of the service disconnect is grounded by an EGC, never the neutral.
